Well, if it's true it's rather obvious that it's because they desperately need new subs.
They think they can lure them in with this sort of crap.

Honestly, it doesn't surprise it had to come down to this. I don't think it'll save it though.
If there are any servers left to merge, that will also happen soon. After that, sometime next year, I expect this game to be no more.

This market is saturated and maybe in a decline, anyone who (still) likes this sort of MMO-model will have decided to stick with one that existed before WAR. For the rest you'll have game hoppers who think they like this type of MMO. And then there's maybe little over a handfull of Warhammer fans and even fewer who actually stick with the game.

Truth be told, from what I heard about Aion, I expect nothing different to happen to it like WAR now.
Same goes for ToR. They need to really differentiate if they want to have any chance of lasting beyond the first two years.
There are some features in ToR that make me think it has a chance the voice acted and ability to choose your responses to affect the outcome of a conversation, and it probably has a larger fanbase than Warhammer, because even I knew of it BEFORE an MMO of it was announced.

But all in all, I think MMO gaming has peaked...for now.
It has long since degraded into a simple 'Dash for Cash' mentality using an ancient model that worked when it was still new and small.
It requires a revamped model, of both gaming and perhaps payment as well. There may be a few genres left where it can work (space and sci-fi and such) but the fantasy genre is exhausted.

Black prophecy and Jumpgate evolution are two space games I'm currently keeping an eye on. They show some potential to me, but I'm not sure how it will work as an actual MMO. But I have a shred of hope for it to become something.

To be honest...I love  T1  Evil Rock Evil Rock HA!

May see a persona of Tessie Twoswords running around in T1 quite a bit if it's free.
