The orange sun set over the hills around Altdorf, its tall buildings shadowed in its view. Grendan stared out at the large city from his bedroom window of Madr manor; head estate of the Strifeland family. As he watched the lights of Altdorf flicker to life in response of the coming darkness, a knock came to his door. "Sir, it is time for their departure." Grendan recognized the voice as one of his servants. "Very well," he replied. "I am on my way down." After putting on his boots and a light jacket for the chill, he hurried downstairs and out into the courtyard. There, 2 young men, geared for both battle and travel, stood. They were chatting with the many servants and family that were also in the courtyard, no doubt to see them off. As Grendan approached, one of the youngsters heard his footsteps and turned to greet him. He was tall and muscular, and met Grendan halfway with a large smile on his face. "Father!" he said, excitedly. Grendan placed a hand on each of his son's shoulders. "Denafrious, I am glad to see the two of you are finally ready to take this journey."
Denafrious, fidgiting left and right on his feet, replied, "I am father! both Caelik and myself are more than anxious to prove ourselves to both you and Sigmar!" As he finished that sentance, the other young man, Caelik, appeared next to him. "Some more than others, it seems. I am eager for battle too, brother. But i wish you would learn to control yourself a little." he said, followed by a long sigh. Grendan sized up his sons, hiding his own excitement. Then, taking in a deep breath, i spoke. "You are finally ready to undergo your pilgramage, my sons. As you know, all Strifelands are warriors; knights of the blazing son. Servants of the empire and Sigmar."
"To prove our loyalty and strength, we all travel into the north th do battle with the marauders of chaos at age eighteen. For the next ten years, the two of you will hone your skills as warriors, your honor as knights, and your faith as servants. When you return, you will be full-fledged Strifeland men! Your family shall be here, eagerly awaiting your return. Do you have any questions before you go?" Both men replied quickly with a "no sir!". Grendan smiled, proud of his sons for getting this far. "Then be off with you both! When you return, I'll expect the two of you to best ME in combat!" They laughed and turned towards the mountain passage that would take them north. Just as they were about to leave the outer gates of Madr, Grendan suddenly rushed to Denafrious and pulled him aside. "Son, remember to take care of your brother. He is smaller, and much frailer than you. The main reason I sent him a year early was so that you would be there to look out for.." before he could finish, Denafrious spoke, cutting him off. "Father, you always taught us that family comes before anything. So long as there is breath in me, so shall there be in him as well. Do not worry so much, as it is an insult to him, is it not?" Grendan stared at his son, shocked that he was just lectured. He chuckled and replied, "Yes, yes...that is correct. Well then, you had best not keep him waiting. You know how impatient he is." With that, Denafrious nodded in reply and jogged to catch up with his younger brother, who had impatiently began up the mountain path without him.
