Jorvral was on his knees, hands grasping at the cold armored hand clenched around his throat. It took an extreme effort to keep breathing, but the only thing that was on his mind was the sharp pain digging from the pointed gauntlet fingers. He could feel warm fluid slowly running down his skin.

“Get your hands off my arm!” The man ordered and squeezed tighter for emphasis. Jorvral let go as he commanded, but the grip held firm. After a few seconds, his eyes rolled back into his head and body went limp. The armored terror squeezed his throat for a moment more, then let him crumble to the ground in a pool of blood. Just then a lightly armored Druchii entered the command tent.

“Lord, a message has arrived for you from way of the campaign in the Shadowlands.” He handed the sealed envelope over to the armored man, then noticed the body at his feet. He glanced up at his commander opening the envelope then back down at the body. He coughed to himself and turned his attention back to the sound of unfolding parchment.

The envelope read: Malorath, we await your arrival – all the preparations have been made. Azaela.

**********

5 years earlier, somewhere the black city of Naggarond.

“You have exceeded in your trials, now you really are a Black Guard.” The dark emerald cloaked Druchii stood before the heavily armored Malorath. He was not wearing his helmet, choosing instead to meet Movrahk without it. The features of the Helbane family were more apparent when his face was revealed. As an adult he looked much more like his fearsome father, especially the sharp black eyebrows. His face was still young, but he had learned that this was a weapon. To be underestimated  was to be given a great advantage.

Though even with this in mind, Movrahk's patronizing tone gave Malorath the deep desire to bury his halberd  into the man's face and it took an extreme effort of will not do so right at that moment. His face was calm as he replied, “Indeed, the hand of Malekith himself.”

Movrahk let a slight smile touch the side of his lips, “You have been very special to us, young one. You had our help many years ago and now, finally you can commit and prove yourself to the Blood Avarice. You know well of our ultimate mission and have learned a great deal all these years, some knowledge that many would kill for. Now it is time for a task of fealty.”

Malorath's eyes stared at Movrahk in a cold, unblinking gaze. No one talked to him that way, not towards one of the Highborn, not towards one of the Black Guard. He knew the Avarice was influential, but he could have tortured Morvahk at his whim outside this cave for such an offense. It was well within his right to do so.

Just then a stunning Female Druchii entered the cave, large daggers holstered at her waist. She was a Bride of Khaine, Malorath realized.

She stood before them both as Movrahk made the introduction, “This is Azaela, one of our agents. Azaela, this is Malorath.” Azaela tilted her head in greeting and Malorath returned it. It was a wise thing to respect a Witch Elf. It was also a rare occasion to see them outside of the temple.

Malorath returned his attention to Movrahk. The cloaked Druchii continued, “As an act of fealty, we require you eliminate a target. Do you agree?”

Malorath thought to himself, what task could be simpler? “I agree.”

“You must eliminate Khaitrus Helbane.”
